Triumph Over Adversity: A Mother-Daughter Memoir

Tell Me Everything, a Memoir by Minka Kelly.

As a ghostwriter who specializes in women’s memoirs, you’ll usually find me curled up, at night, reading one. I can’t get my hands on enough of them; in addition to honing my craft, each women’s memoir I read reconfirms the power of storytelling.

When we discover how an author has faced her own life challenges, and risen above them, we feel inspired, enlightened, and find solace—even though her experiences may have been different than our own. Her personal journey, deep enough to write about, expresses resilience and strength calling us to find our own.

Nowhere is the theme or story arc of “triumph over adversity” more on display than in memoirs about mothers and daughters. Thankfully, there are many. One of the best is the memoir, Tell Me Everything by Minka Kelly.

A memoir about resilience

American actress, model, and philanthropist Minka Kelly rose to fame for her role as Lyla Garrity on the NBC drama series Friday Night Lights. It was a steep climb. Raised by a mentally-unstable mother, Minka lived in a world of strip clubs and Albuquerque drug dealers where she came of age.

What strength and stamina Minka possessed to rise above the cycles of addiction, sex, and self-worthlessness—perpetuated by both her mother and grandmother. Her willingness to go where life took her, face her own pain—as well as her mother’s, and move beyond is deeply inspiring.

In spite of her mother’s disappearances for years at a time, and when at home, being drugged out and leaving Minka prey to physical abuse from her stepfather, eventually, Minka found compassion for her mother. She accepted her mother’s abusiveness and childishness, her deep love for Minka, and her own deep suffering.

Yet Minka shares how her childhood traumas have prevented her from forming successful intimate relationships. She openly describes her defense mechanisms and the pain of acknowledging them.

She understands she isn’t done healing but is on her way.

From struggle to success: embracing life’s challenges

From reading Minka’s memoir, we are reminded that life is about the journey, and not the destination. She didn’t ask for her difficult life. None of us do. It’s not our fault when we’re born into poverty or with other hardships.

Yet in Tell Me Everything, Minka shows if we work through our resistance and anger to accept ourselves and life—and the cards that have been dealt us—we can overcome just about anything.
